"HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF SAN VICENTE"

Way back in 1877, San Vicente was already a municipality even before Ambos Camarines was divided into Camarines Norte and Camarines Sur. The geographical location of this one-barrio of Talisay, 118 years prior to its creation as a municipality, is oftentimes pointed out as the reason for its very moderate development.

The origin of the name of the municipality which is in the inland part of Camarines Norte has some religious elements, however skeptics do not believe in miracles. Yet even in this age of high technology, many things happen that could not be explained by the finite mind of man. Things that are beyond the comprehension of men could only be ascribed to the Divine and therefore a miracle.

It is said that on old woman who lived at the eastern part of the Barangay San Jose owned a statue of St. Vincent Ferrer. Every morning at dawn she was accustomed to praying to the Saint. But one morning when the woman went to her altar, she noticed that the place Saint Vincent used to occupy was vacant. She went in search of him and she found him among the thick guava groves on the southern par of the barangay. The statue was only a foot high but she could no longer carry the statue back to the house. Requesting the help of some strong and able-bodied men they try to lift the statue but to no avail. Soon an old, old woman devotee of the Saint arrived walking on bent knees and folded arms. She took hold of the statue and tried to raise it. Lo! Miracle of Miracles, she lifted it almost as lightly if it were a blade of grass. But it often happened that every morning at early dawn that Saint was nowhere to be found. Pandemonium would break loose unusually resulting to a wild goose hunt for the disappearing statue. As always, the Saint would be found standing on the same big stone amidst the guava trees, his body so wrapped in luminous light that the people could not stand the sparkling brightness. Investigations revealed many “amorseko” blooms fastened to his clothes. Had the Saint been walking among the undergrowth?

Saint Vincent was then carried to his glass sanctuary in Barangay San Jose where a meeting was held by the Capitanes, Cura Parroco to appropriate funds for the construction of a church in the sitio chosen by the Saint himself.

Because of this miracle, Saint Vincent Ferrer was made the patron saint of the town and the town itself was named after the Patron Saint, San Vicente Ferrer.
